Shaun Harris on road to recovery according to his wife

The wife of badly injured TT star Shaun Harris has thanked everyone who has offered help, support and encouragement since his racing crash.

Fiona Kelsen told Isle of Man-based newspaper the Manx Independent:

‘We couldn’t have coped without it.’

TT winner Shaun, 43, suffered multiple injuries when he crashed in Union Mills during the Superstock race at the Centenary TT. The Manx Independent reports his injuries included breaks in both legs, a badly-broken pelvis, fractures in both arms, broken ribs, a compressed fracture of his vertebra and the loss of four teeth.

Talking about her husband’s crash for the first time, Fiona told the Manx Independent:

‘The first I knew was when I had a phone call at 7.45am as I was about to go to work.
A friend rang to say Shaun had had an accident so I rang the hospital and spoke to the consultant who said it was “extreme touch and go” and if I came, I may not get here in time.’

Shaun’s prognosis was bleak after the crash, chiefly due to internal bleeding linked to his broken pelvis. He was kept in a medically induced coma for several days.

After being brought out of the coma he remained on a ventilator, but was able to communicate with medical staff and visitors, the Manx Independent reports.

Fiona told the newspaper her husband is now on the road to recover and, when well enough, will be transferred to the UK for more surgery. However, the Manx Independent reported, it isn’t known when that will happen.
