John McGuinness celebrates TT success (Stephen Davison)

The Isle of Man TT features heavily in the latest book from renowned photographer Stephen Davison – the man described by Motorcycle News as “the world's number one pure road racing lensman”.

In Hard Roads, Stephen sets out to discover what drives the greatest road racing names in the world to push themselves to the limits. He makes use of his unparalleled access to the riders to examine the attraction of the sport, and the fascination it holds for the racers, their families and the fans.

In his incredible photographs and accompanying text, Stephen captures the essence of the sport – the all-consuming passion, the incredible skill and speed, and, always, the spectre of disaster on the horizon.

Hard Roads, published by Blackstaff Press, follows a season on the roads, from the tiny lanes of Cookstown in County Tyrone to the exotic city streets of Chinese Macau.

Along the way we are taken on to the roads of every National road race course in Ireland – including Athea, Bush, Skerries and Walderstown – and on to the famous North West 200, Scarborough and Ulster Grand Prix circuits.

Plus, of course, the Isle of Man TT and its legendary Mountain circuit features heavily in the book.

Alongside the human and honest text are some very moving photos, including many capturing the final days of some of the best-loved and most missed road racers of recent years – including Robert Dunlop, Martin Finnegan, Richard Britton and Darran Lindsay.

Hard Roads, Stephen’s fourth road racing book, presents a vivid and uncompromising portrait of the sport he loves in more than 120 incredible colour photographs.

It is an unforgettable testament to the sport he loves, a book that captures the sense of the ordinary and the extraordinary that is the essence of road racing.
